As part of my new years fitness kick, I’ve been attempting to try new ways to get active. I’ve had success with my treadmill so far, and I’ve also tried an ab toning belt. The last couple of weeks I’ve tried something I’ve heard so many good things about, and is a more fun alternative to normal exercise.. Zumba!
Zumba combines Latin and International music with a fun and effective workout system through dance and aerobics. One of the main things I loved about being signed up at the gym was the availability of so many different fitness classes. I found them a fun and energetic way to get my heartbeat racing and my body moving, and having music makes it all the more fun! Personally I can find exercise a little bit boring sometimes, but I find it a lot more enjoyable with some music! Although I enjoyed my sessions at the gym, the monthly charge was just too much for me, and I found I often was too tired after work to drive all the way to the gym.
So as an alternative, I’ve been trying the Zumba Exhilarate DVD Fitness Pack (£49.99). It’s an amazing way to get fit at home, it’s so much fun, and it burns so many more calories than you’d expect! I’ve been trying the set of 7 DVD’s, which starts with the Step-by-Step one. It was a bit tougher than I was expecting it to be as a beginner, but it really works your whole body and is a great way to get into Zumba. This first DVD is an introduction into the whole set, which ends with a fitness concert featuring 9 instructors in front of a live audience.
The instructors are really friendly and outgoing, which makes them easy to follow and likeable. There’s nothing worse than an annoying OTT instructor for this kind of thing! I did the first DVD with my Mum, and as it lasts almost an hour, it’s quite full on, but thoroughly enjoyable. The first DVD burns a massive 598 calories, so it really is energetic! There’s a couple of shorter DVD’s for if you have less time, but they’re generally more energetic. I really enjoy the dance aspect of Zumba, although to be honest I’m pretty terrible at it (especially salsa!). But it’s so great to be able to do it at home, and you really don’t need much space. The set comes complete with with Zumba dance and toning sticks, which are used in some of the routines (although I’ve not got that far yet!).
