Spring has officially arrived which means it’s the perfect time to de-clutter! With the return of every springtime, I feel re-energised and ready to refresh my life. It’s a great opportunity to give your life a spring clean and clear some space in your home and mind.
Sometimes it’s easy to fall into an bad routine and clutter can come in all shapes and sizes including toxic friendships, unpaid bills, bad health habits as well as an untidy home. This is by no means a ‘life guru’ type post, but more of my own personal to-do list, so I thought I’d share it with you!
1. Social Media Clear Out
This is something that I’ve been doing myself over the last couple of weeks. So often I’m scrolling through Facebook (God knows why I even go on Facebook.. awful) and I come across some random pages that I clicked ‘like’ on over 10 years ago and for some reason they are still taking up space in my life. The same goes for random people that I have perhaps met once or twice and am never going to meet again. Do I need these people on my timeline? Do I care about what they got up to this weekend or what events they are going to? No. Delete.
I have actively been clearing out my Facebook friends list as well as unliking all those silly pages I liked when I was 18. The same goes for Instagram and Twitter and any other social media that you use. If you come across something or someone that you have no interest in, don’t feel bad about unfollowing/unfriending them. Social media is cluttered enough without having to scroll through loads of uninspiring posts from strangers. And I feel so much better after a good clear out! It means that my feeds are now only full of people that I actually care about, or meaningful/inspiring accounts.
I’ve also started using the new ‘Collections’ feature on Instagram which allows you to save photos that you might want to refer back to. You can save them in private folders a bit like Pinterest. I’ve been saving loads of handy life hacks and DIY’s and things that inspire me.
There are websites you can use where you can unfollow Twitter accounts in bulk so you can do it quickly such as ManageFlitter. You can sort all the accounts you follow by spam score so you can delete spammy accounts or those that rarely tweet or haven’t tweeted for years. Don’t forget to give your photo storage, emails, and phone memory a clear out of old stuff too.. decluttering your digital life is just as important as your ‘real life’!
2. Check Up On Your Finances
Do you take a look at your bank account regularly and check what you have incoming and outgoing? I know.. checking your bank balance is perhaps something that you put off doing, bills can often be put to the side and forgotten about, and direct debits are automatic so you just ignore them. But with the new financial year just starting, now is a good time to give your finances a spring clean!
Read your bank statements; do you have any old direct debits coming out for things you don’t need anymore or that you didn’t even realise you set up? Are you paying more for your monthly mobile bill than you thought? Go through all of your transactions just to check everything is as it should be. There could be old gym memberships you no longer use, free trials that you forgot to cancel, or insurance auto-renewals that you no longer need.
I use the banking app Yolt which separates your transactions into categories so you can see exactly where your money is going each month and is a great way to help manage your finances. If you find that you’re overspending each month in the ‘shopping’ and ‘entertainment’ categories, maybe it’s time to cut back!
3. Closet Clearout
This is a pretty big one for me! I’ve got a huge wardrobe full of clothes at my parents house that I don’t want anymore. I have gone through it all and had a clearout – I either sold stuff at the car boot sale or gave it to charity. I’ve also sold quite a lot of clothes on Facebook Marketplace too! There’s no point in me keeping clothes that no longer fit (and probably never will!) as it takes up space and the clothes are all in good condition and could go to a much better home!
Section all your unwanted clothes and get rid of them all in a few different ways. The best stuff that’s new with tags or more high end I will try to sell online either on local Facebook groups or on eBay. They pay the most! Anything else you could take to a car boot sale during the summer. Each summer I make over £150 at the car boot, and a few years ago I wrote a post with my car boot sale selling tips. Anything else I have left and the carboot sale rejects I will probably take to one of those clothes recycling centres that give you about 50p per carrier bag of stuff, or alternatively just donate it to the charity shop.
Not just clothes though… don’t forget to go through your whole bedroom! I have boxes and boxes of shoes under my bed, most of which I haven’t worn in years so I’m sure I won’t miss them. Then there’s the handbags and belts, plus things like undies, bras and tights which I feel like I am forever buying but never throwing out! It’s a big task but it can feel so rewarding to get that space back and also earn a few £’s too!
4. Spring Clean Your Make Up Stash
If you’re anything like me then you probably have some old bits of make up in your cosmetics bag that you never use any more but just haven’t got round to getting rid of. Make up bags are the perfect breeding ground for bad bacteria to grow, so it’s important to ensure that your cosmetics are as clean as possible, so start by getting rid of anything old and unusable. Make sure you also give you make up brushes a good clean too, and if you can, put your make up bag through the washing machine or just give it a good soak in some hot soapy water. It’s amazing how much dirt comes off! Gross.
Why not also give yourself an organised space for your make up? I have a bedside table with three deep drawers where I keep my most used make up and skincare stuff, and then I have a bathroom cabinet for other general toiletries and storage boxes for nail polish and any other beauty bits. Although they could all do with a tidy up!
Go through all your toiletries too. I sometimes start using one shampoo and then switch to another and then end up with loads of different half empty bottles at the end of my bath! Either use up or throw out any unwanted toiletries so you can make some space (for new ones!).
5. Freshen Up Your Home
This one is probably the most obvious of all.. although not the easiest! Go through each room in your home and give it a little spruce up from top to bottom. It’s so important to keep your home clean and it’s a great wait to relieve stress.
I like to set aside a day (I know.. who wouldn’t want to spend their whole Saturday cleaning) so I can get it all done and out of the way and generally I actually find that I feel a whole lot better afterwards! Alternatively you could do just one task each day if that makes it less tedious (for example Monday could be for hoovering, Tuesday is the day for dusting etc). It always feels so nice being able to relax in my home knowing it’s all nice and clean, tidy, and clutter free!
De-clutter your kitchen cupboards, the fridge, the drawers where you hide away all your ‘stuff’, and that paperwork you keep meaning to file away. Get rid of anything that you don’t need or doesn’t make you happy. You’ll feel a lot better for it! You could even try rearranging the furniture in your home to make the space work better for you, or add more storage solutions to help add organisation. Perhaps spring is also the time for you to give your home a complete style make over or redecorate!
6. Cleanse Your Body and Mind
This one is just as important as all the others. Don’t forget to de-clutter your body and mind as well as your physical space, because it’s just as vital (if not more so) but much easier to forget. Your physical health can affect how you think and how you feel emotionally, and at the same time, bad emotional and mental health can also lead to poor physical health, so it’s important to take care of all aspects of your well-being.
If you find that you’re always tired and feel sluggish, try setting a regular bedtime earlier than usual. Your body craves consistency, plus you’re more likely to get enough sleep if you schedule rest like your other important tasks. Working out can improve sleep too, and try not to use your phone whilst you’re in bed so you can switch off easier.
It’s easy to fall into a routine of no exercise in winter alongside eating unhealthy comfort food. Spring is a good time to give yourself a boost and refresh your eating and fitness habits. I’ve recently bought a Fitbit fitnes tracker and I’m also trying to think more about what I eat and drink and hopefully overtime my bad eating habits will change and I’ll be a bit more active. Nothing drastic, but just swapping a naughty treat for a fresh piece of fruit or swapping a processed dinner for something slightly healthier. Although I’m certainly never going to cut out the treats altogether, but every little helps!
As well as trying to be a little bit healthier physically, it’s also important to cut out the stresses in your life as much as possible. Toxic relationships and friendships can be draining, in the same way that going into a job you hate everyday can be. It’s surprising how much negative influences can affect your mood, physical energy and overall zest for life. Be honest with yourself and look at whether that relationship/friendship/job is worth it. And if you can’t figure out a way to improve it, it’s best to cut ties and move onto something else.
