The Joy of Collecting Meaningful Things

Life is full of moments that we want to treasure and revisit. Collecting reminders of the people, places and things we love helps keep those memories alive and can make every day feel that little bit more special.

From quirky vintage finds to keepsakes that mark personal milestones, curating a collection of items you love adds personality and joy to both your home and your life. In this article, we’re looking at the joy of collecting meaningful things, and how to surround yourself with treasured finds.

Cherish Everyday Finds

Collecting doesn’t always have to be grand, or even deliberate. Small, everyday items like postcards, handwritten notes and homemade gifts can all hold memories and sentimental value. You might be surprised by how many treasured mementoes you already have!

Keeping these small but special things organised and out on display rather than tucked away in a drawer or cupboard makes them part of your daily life and helps to personalise your space.

Here are just a few ideas on how to display keepsakes…

Gallery Walls

Gallery walls are the perfect solution for displaying treasured photographs, postcards, art prints or children’s drawings.

Box Frames

Ideal for 3D items, shadow or box frames are perfect for keeping your special mementoes out on display but safely tucked away and free from dust! You could display baby clothes, toys, a family recipe or cookbook passed down through generations, a vinyl record that means something special, ticket stubs or holiday souvenirs.

Memory Jars

Great for all those odds and ends that would otherwise get buried in a drawer or lost in the bottom of a box. Memory jars can be used to store trinkets, shells, rocks, foreign currency, and ticket stubs, to name just a few.

Photobooks

With smartphone ownership increasing year-on-year, many of us now have high-quality cameras literally at our fingertips on a daily basis. This means we often fill our phone galleries with endless photographs of our family, friends, pets and surroundings, but very few of us ever get around to printing them off or displaying them in our homes. A photobook is an excellent way to collate pictures from that special holiday or family event. You can then place it somewhere prominent like a coffee table as a beautiful reminder whenever you need it.

Make Milestones Last

Some items hold great significance in themselves, of course. Once-in-a-lifetime moments like milestone birthdays, weddings, bucket-list trips and graduations all deserve meaningful keepsakes to honour their importance.

Some occasions come with their own meaningful mementoes, for example timeless tokens of love like engagement rings are worn daily and sometimes passed down through generations. While brides often keep their wedding dresses and may choose to have their bridal flowers dried and preserved.

For other significant milestones, you can get creative coming up with special keepsakes of your own. For example, an engraved box to hold a degree scroll after graduation, or a guest book for a milestone birthday that allows friends and family to share special memories and messages of love.

Pass on Memories

Keepsakes are even more special when they’re shared with others. Whether you’re running out of space in your home to display special items or you’ve inherited something you’re unlikely to use, passing on meaningful pieces to other family members means someone else can treasure and get joy from them.

When gifting family heirlooms, be sure to also pass on the meaning behind an item and any stories that go along with it. This helps to create connections across generations and strengthen family bonds, and ensures that meaningful keepsakes will be treasured for decades to come.
