How Universal Studios Bedford Could Affect Milton Keynes and the Local Area

The plans for the exciting new Universal Studios Bedford Resort have sparked a lot of conversation locally recently. A development of this size doesn’t just impact one town, it has the potential to shape the wider area, including Milton Keynes.

As someone who has visited Universal Orlando and also Singapore and loved the fun atmosphere of the parks, I’m genuinely excited to see how Universal brings that magic to the UK. I’m really looking forward to finding out more about the plans as they develop, and I can’t wait to visit once the park finally opens. If you live in Milton Keynes, find out how this project could affect the local area.

What Universal Studios Bedford Means for the Local Economy

One of the most talked-about aspects of Universal Studios Bedfordshire is the economic opportunity it could bring. The project is expected to create thousands of jobs, both during construction and once the park is up and running, across areas such as hospitality, entertainment, retail, creative industries and technology.

A particularly significant point for Milton Keynes is that many of these roles are likely to be filled by people within an hour’s commute — Bedford Borough Council estimates around 80% of employees will come from Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes.

For Milton Keynes residents and job-seekers, this could open:

  • New career opportunities in tourism, entertainment tech, and hospitality

  • Demand for specialist skills — from ride engineering to creative media

  • Growth in supporting professional services (marketing, IT, logistics)

All of this supports Milton Keynes’ already dynamic job market and could attract new young professionals to the area.

Transport Links Between Bedford and Milton Keynes

Transport improvements are a key part of the Universal Studios Bedford plans, and these could have knock-on benefits for Milton Keynes. Proposed road and rail upgrades aim to improve access to the park and make travel across the region easier.

The plans include upgrades such as:

  • New and expanded railway stations (e.g., Wixams)

  • New slip roads from major roads like the A421

  • Enhanced connections with East West Rail

For Milton Keynes residents, better connections could mean smoother journeys between Bedford and MK, as well as improved links across the wider Oxford–Cambridge corridor. Over time, this could also increase visitor traffic through Milton Keynes, benefiting local shops, cafés and services.

Housing Demand and Property in Milton Keynes

Large developments like Universal Studios Bedford often influence local housing markets, and Milton Keynes may feel some of that impact. With new jobs being created nearby, demand for housing — particularly rentals — could increase as people look to live within commuting distance of the park.

While Milton Keynes is already a strong housing market, the arrival of a global attraction less than an hour away could:

  • Increase demand for homes from workers seeking convenient commutes

  • Boost rental markets

  • Encourage more development of residential and mixed-use space

Of course, with higher demand comes concerns about affordability — something planners and local councils will need to balance as growth continues.

Tourism and Visitor Spill-Over into Milton Keynes

Universal Studios Bedford is expected to attract millions of visitors each year, many of whom will explore beyond the park itself. With its shopping centres, restaurants, hotels and entertainment venues, Milton Keynes is well placed to benefit from visitor spill-over.

This will likely:

  • Draw millions of visitors annually to the region

  • Create opportunities for Milton Keynes businesses — especially in hospitality, accommodation and events

  • Further spotlight the area as part of a broader UK tourist circuit

This could be particularly positive for independent businesses, helping to introduce new audiences to the area and encouraging people to spend a little longer exploring what the region has to offer.

Challenges and Considerations

While most of the excitement surrounds economic opportunity, there are legitimate concerns that come with massive developments like this:

  • Pressure on local services

  • Environmental and traffic impacts

  • Potential strain on water, infrastructure and housing affordability

The Future of Universal Studios Bedford

There are, of course, important conversations to be had around traffic, infrastructure and sustainability, and these will continue as the project moves forward. Still, it’s hard not to feel optimistic about what Universal Studios Bedford could mean for Milton Keynes and the wider area.

Having experienced Universal in Orlando, I’m really excited to see how those ideas translate to a UK setting. I’ll be watching the plans closely over the coming years — and I can’t wait to visit once the gates finally open!
