Bedford is a charming small town not too far from me in Milton Keynes, around 30 minutes drive away. Bedford and its surrounding areas have become some of my favourite places to eat, thanks to its mix of independent cafés, cosy pubs, brilliant local restaurants and strong independent food scene.

1. Just Baked (The Little Brownie Company)
If you love freshly baked treats, brunch, and pretty café interiors, Just Baked is a must-visit. Run by The Little Brownie Company, this gorgeous café near Marston Moretaine is possibly my favourite cafe ever and serves homemade brownies, blondies, and a delicious breakfast, brunch and lunch menu. They also do an amazing hot chocolate!

2. The Cappuccino Bar
A Bedford favourite, The Cappuccino Bar specialises in authentic Italian cuisine served in a warm and elegant setting. Expect pasta dishes, risotto, bruschetta, salads, and indulgent desserts. It’s ideal for date nights, lunch with friends, and anyone who loves classic Italian comfort food. It’s also great value, as they have a two course set menu which is excellent value for money.

3. The Old Curiosity Café
This whimsical, vintage-styled café has bags of charm and ran by lovely owners. With mismatched furniture, quirky décor, and a cosy atmosphere, Curiosity Café is perfect for relaxed brunches, homemade cakes, and lazy afternoons. It’s a lovely spot to slow down or enjoy a quiet catch-up over tea and cake.

4. Chicken George
Known for legendary fried chicken and award-winning wings, Chicken George is a Bedford institution. Expect comfort food, stacked burgers, loaded fries, and lots of flavour. Great for casual dining or takeaway when you want something fun and delicious.

5. Fuego Tapas & Grill
For Spanish flavours, riverside views, and a lively dining experience, Fuego Tapas & Grill is a fantastic choice. A charming vintage style independent bakery and tea room in Ampthill, known for beautifully decorated cakes, homemade bakes, and picture-perfect afternoon tea. A dream for anyone who loves vintage vibes and sweet treats – and a gorgeous spot for Instagram photos.

10. The Kiln, Stewartby
A lovely little independent cafe a short drive from Bedford and just a 5-minute walk from Stewartby Lake. Perfect for brunch, cakes, brownies, tasty lunches, or coffee after a lakeside walk. They do the best toasties around – I highly recomment the pulled pork and mozarella toastie (and a milkshake!).

A family-run Italian restaurant just outside Bedford in the pretty town of Ampthill. Known for their authentic Italian dishes, stone-baked pizzas, homemade pasta, and warm, friendly service. 12. Nazar Turkish Kitchen, Bedford
If you’re after something a little more special, Nazar is a good shout. Inside, it has stylish interiors, and the menu is full of Turkish favourites, from mixed grills and juicy lamb to fresh mezze plates. Portions are really decent too, so it’s great for sharing. It’s also a really good option if you’re with a group, as there’s something for everyone,including plenty of vegetarian choices. The atmosphere is always lively, the service is friendly, and it just has that good meal out vibe.
