A few months ago I was kindly invited to attend my very first race day; the Al Shaqab Lockinge Day at Newbury Racecourse which was held last weekend. I’d been looking forward to it for weeks and when the day finally came round and I was really excited for my first races experience!
We made a little ‘blogger girls day out’ from it as I went along with Terri, Charl and Lily and we all glammed up in our snazziest dresses (outfit post coming soon). We were super lucky with the weather as rain was predicted on the forecast but we enjoyed a day full of blue skies and sunshine which made the whole event even better!
I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the day, but we were spoilt rotten and invited up to the Fred Winter hospitality suite which was a beautiful room with a large balcony overlooking the racecourse. We were treated to lunch which included lots of little canapés (the sea bass and mash was divine) as well as free flowing champagne and fresh lemonade (yum!).
Even after lunch, there were various treats going around including mini crème brulee, chocolate brownies, cupcakes, finger sandwiches and even individual cheese boards! Delicious!
We placed a few little bets and I had beginners luck when my horse came in first place on the first race and I won £5! To be honest I don’t really understand odds and betting etc but it was still a very fun experience and we all cheered on the random horses that came racing by. I would definitely go to another race day! The whole atmosphere was really friendly and enjoyable.
After a bit too much champers we all went back to The Lodge which is currently a B&B type accommodation where the stable lads stay, but it is soon to be opened up to guests and race day visitors. We were lucky enough to be some of the first to stay at the hotel and it was literally on the doorstep of the racecourse entrance making the location perfect!
We were looked after by the hotel Duty Manager Juan who took great care of us and was always cheerful and helpful in every way! After our day at the races we ordered pizza and went up to the rooms to feast and settled down in front of Eurovision. Our room was a double which had the biggest bed EVER and I had one of the best nights sleep of my life. In the morning we were treated to a lovely traditional English breakfast which was just what I needed when I woke up! Super yummy.
Overall I had such a fun weekend at Newbury Racecourse and I’ll certainly be back! You can also check out Lilys blog post, Charls blog and Terris vlog too!
