Sneak Peek Inside our New Victorian Home

My blog has been a little bit quiet lately and in case you don’t already know from following me on social media – I’ve bought a new house! I say ‘I’ but really I mean ‘we’, as I sold my flat and me and Gavin have now bought our first home together! Super exciting! So I’ve been busy moving/decorating/DIYing for the past four weeks and things are now settling down again. We’ve done so much work to the house already, but there’s still plenty to do!

You can follow our renovation adventure on my new Instagram account @victoriahouse78

The house is a Victorian terrace in Milton Keynes which was quite hard to find. I knew I wanted to stay within Milton Keynes but I also wanted a period property with a bit of character. However, MK is only 50 years old, so most houses here are 60’s style or modern new builds which I’m not so keen on. But there are a few small pockets of older properties in the city and we finally managed to find a lovely little three bedroom Victorian terrace house which is bursting with original features!

I absolutely love the original tiled footpath, wooden front door, big sash bay window, fireplace, coving and much more! I’ve already posted a few photos of the house over on Instagram so you can see more there, but I just wanted to share a few of my favourite new homeware products.

Funky Flamingo Mirror

In my old flat the theme was girlie, floral and vintage style and I didn’t want to go down the same path in our new house. I wanted it to be more glam, sophisticated and stylish so I’ve decided on a tropical theme throughout the house with splashes of gold! I love flamingos and pineapples (don’t ask me why) so I wanted to incorporate those into the decor.

Our dining room will soon be wallpapered with Laura Ashley gold pineapple paper (it’s more subtle than it sounds) so I wanted some jazzy accessories! The pineapple lamp is also from Laura Ashley but my favourite feature in the room is the gorgeous gold and pink flamingo mirror from Red Candy!

This mirror couldn’t be any more perfect or any more ‘me’! I absolutely love it! It’s so quirky and unusual, I’ve never seen anything like it in any high street stores. It’s currently sitting happily on the mantle piece alongside some pineapple accessories and I admire it everyday! It’s very unique and eye catching and would make a great gift for an animal lover! Stay tuned for more dining room updates….

Yes I Want It.. Bar Accessories

Our new house comes with a full sized cellar, which is actually pretty cool! Seeing as I’ve taken over the rest of the house, I thought it was only fair to let Gavin use it as his ‘man cave’. I even bought him a Stella Atrois mini beer fridge and a bar table and stools. Lucky Gavin.

It’s a bit of a mess down there at the moment but check out this super cool beer o’clock neon light from Yes I Want It! Gavin loves it and it’s now sitting pride of place on top of his beer fridge! It has three lighting settings to choose from including constant light, flashing light and a strobe light. The light is battery powered and lightweight so you can move it around easily – a great feature for house parties or student digs!

Yes I Want It offer a huge range of cool gift ideas including homeware, gadgets, and snazzy bar accessories! I wanted to create my own little bar so I bought a vintage tea trolley off Facebook for £20 to use as my drinks trolley! This gorgeous rose gold cocktail set is only £9.99 and looks perfect on the trolley! The set includes a cocktail shaker, stirrer, strainer and jigger all in the metallic rose gold finish. I can’t wait to invite the girls round for a cocktail party and test it out!

This set of stainless steel straws look great alongside the cocktail set and they’re better for the environment. Say no to single use plastic straws with these glamorous steel ones instead! These eco-friendly straws come as a set of 4 and also includes a handy cleaning brush so that they can be reused again and again. The colours are very fancy and eye catching – pink and blue two-toned, stainless steels silver, rose gold and gold!

And lastly.. a bar is only complete when it has an official BAR sign! This metal marquee bar light is only £19.99 and is the perfect addition to complete the drinks trolley! It’s battery operated so it’s easy to set up and use as you simply need 2 AA batteries and then you’re ready to go!

Treasure House Twenty Homeware

As I changed our home decor style completely it meant that I was on the look out for new home accessories! Possibly the most fun part of buying a new house! I wanted some stylish candles to put on our new mantle piece above the fireplace, and these ones from Treasures House Twenty are perfect!

As our theme is tropical with hints of gold and teal so these were exactly what I was looking for. The little tealight holder is adorned with dainty gold pineapples and it sits perfectly alongside our other gold accessories. I also love the glass gold and teal palm leaf candle which looks gorgeous next to the matching gold and teal planter.

Treasure House Twenty is an online boutique selling beautiful and the finest home interior products. They stock a range of candles, diffusers, ornaments and gifts and best of all.. everything is under £20! They have some really lovely items and I especially love their candle range. It’s a great website to browse through and get some inspiration or even shop for Christmas gifts and stocking fillers!

Matalan Flamingo Lamp

I’ve been dying to share my new flamingo lamp on my blog since I received it! Can you believe it is from Matalan? It has an antique gold base and it came with a lovely pretty pink lamp shade, but I swapped it for a teal velvet one so that it would match the living room. It’s so eye-catching and a great talking point – it’s definitely a big feature in the room! It’s currently showing as out of stock on the website, but I’ve noticed it keeps getting restocked so keep an eye on it and snap it up if you can!

Christy Bedding & Towels

Sneak Peek Inside our New Victorian Home

Our bedroom is going to be painted pale grey with a duck egg blue feature wall, so I wanted a nice subtle bedding set for the master bedroom. This luxury bed linen from Christy is made from 100% cotton sateen with a high 230 thread count and a lustrous sheen. I really like the grey and white geometric pattern which is a bit more ‘grown up’ than my usual pink floral bedding! It’s super soft and cosy and it certainly looks the part too. I just need some nice matching cushions to go on the bed now!

I’ve had sets of Christy towels for years, use them regularly and they remain in good condition. Good quality towels are certainly worth investing in and Christy towels are luxuriously soft, super absorbent and exceptionally durable. I was kindly offered a new set of their Renaissance range of towels to try in Dove Grey and Ash Grey to match our new bathroom – I love the colours! They’re made from 100% Egyptian cotton and they’re really fluffy and thick. They would make a great gift for anyone moving to a new home or perhaps their first home – they’re such good quality and will really stand the test of time.

Frenchic Furniture Paint

I will be doing a separate blog post on this little upcycling project but I just wanted to show you my new dining table set! I bought a very orange pine farmhouse table and chairs set on eBay for only £37 – an absolute bargain! We spent ages sanding down the table top which had a really thick wax/varnish on it so it took a lot of elbow grease to get it all off! We used an electric sander and it still took forever!

But luckily for the table legs and the chairs no sanding was required as I used Whitey White Frenchic chalk paint straight onto the wood. Their Lazy Range is a unique chalk and mineral paint with a wax infusion so it is self priming, self levelling and self sealing. It’s so easy to use and it’s really smooth with excellent coverage! This paint is so good because you don’t need to prep or sand the wood down prior to using – you simply apply it and leave it to dry! It dries in around 2 hours too, and there’s no need to seal it with wax so it’s very quick – you can give something an amazing makeover in only a couple of hours!

Land of Rugs Trellis Rug

Sneak Peek Inside our New Victorian Home

Picking a new rug is more difficult than I imagined. I wanted a nice statement rug for the living room, but I didn’t want anything too modern. I wanted it to fit in with the traditional style of the room but I didn’t want it to be plain and boring. This trellis print rug from Land of Rugs is exactly what I was after! The Medina rug is beautifully hand crafted in 100% wool and it features the classic trellis pattern that I’d seen in so many Instagram/Pinterest posts.

It is tufted in a soft high pile and I picked the grey colour option, although it is also available in blue, beige, pink and terracotta. This is the biggest size available which is 160 x 230cm and is just the right size for our living room. Land of Rugs have a huge variety of high end rugs at affordable prices, and they also offer free UK delivery, guarantee the lowest prices and easy returns too.
