This simple point can be highly effective at pulling disparate design ideas together; while not necessarily the first thing you should think about in each space, this thought can be instrumental in giving direction to your decoration.
Simply put, each space should have a focal point. It might be where you place the TV in your living room, but it can be so much more. For instance, you could make a feature of a mantelpiece, by painting it in contrast to the other walls of your home. You could paint a feature wall that draws the eye and serves to lengthen the room too. This might seem a basic tip, but it is no less essential – and can be easy to lose track of when in the middle of renovation work, too. Before you make a single décor decision, you should try to drill down into what your style is.
This is especially important when it comes to new build homes, which are, for all intents and purposes, blank canvas homes. Here, you need to establish your style from scratch, and cannot rely on pre-existing quirks or features to do so. Mood boards are your friend here, as you can collect little bits of inspiration together and reverse-engineer your favourite home décor decisions accordingly.

We’ve already mentioned painting in passing, and it is a practically non-negotiable element of any home decoration project. It is cheaper, easy to DIY, and can have an utterly transformative impact on the feel of your home. The difficult bit isn’t necessarily doing the painting, but rather picking out the right colours for each space.
A little advance research, and some quality time spent with a colour wheel, can help you pull together some interesting palettes to work with. Many paint suppliers will be happy to match colours to ones you’ve found, so don’t be afraid to look beyond the big-brand suppliers either!
